I found it striking that the study only tested basic punctuation like commas and periods, which seems like it would be something most people learn in elementary school. But then I realized that's exactly the point - the researchers were testing whether people actually apply what they learned, not whether they've memorized rules. So what happens if you give people a test that actually requires understanding the function of punctuation rather than just recognizing the symbol?
